GRAY WHALES COUNT

From 101— either direction — exit at Glen Annie/Storke Road. Turn away from the mountains. You are going south on Storke Road toward the ocean (though you cannot see it yet).

You will go past Marketplace with McDonalds, Home Depot, and Costco (and many others). Where Storke seems to end and the main flow turns left on El Colegio, you go straight through the light and the road veers right. You may see a sign that says WEST CAMPUS PARKING PERMIT REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES. Believe it!

Keep going and stay right. The road is narrow and winding, but not too long. Devereux Slough is on your right. (Don't make any turn-offs to the left.) You will come upon a steel-bar gate. It is an an automatic gate, with a push-button combination pad. You do not need to get out of your car. The gate will close behind you. As you leave, you simply stop before the gate (at the speed limit sign) and the gate opens. You pass through and the gate closes behind you. First class!

Our access road continues beyond the locked gate.  The new road is about 200 meters. It ends at the old gate that is no longer a gate, just a pass-through the fence. Continue about twenty meters and turn right into the parking area. You can then walk back out to the road, turn right and walk out to Counter Point. We are located to the right of a large Celtic cross.

Counter Point.

We enjoy free parking for this research effort. Spaces are limited, and you must park in the designated parking area.

This is a nature reserve. Pets are not allowed at any time (even in your car). Put your GWC parking tag (to be provided) on your dashboard. It is not a permit, but it does help with tracking usage; and it does inform authorities you are there doing permitted research. (You do not need a West Campus Permit to park inside the gate, but you may park inside the gate only when you are working a shift.)
